Many advances in emergency care start with patients who agree to take part in a study during their visit. Here is what taking part means and who to contact.

If you’re asked to take part
A member of our research team may ask whether you’d like to join a study during your visit. If that happens, here is what to expect.

It’s your choice
Taking part in research is voluntary. You can say no, or stop at any time, and your care doesn’t change.

Someone explains it first
A research coordinator explains what a study involves, its risks and benefits, and answers your questions before you decide.

Every study is reviewed
Studies with people are reviewed and approved by UVA’s Institutional Review Board, which protects research participants.
Good questions to ask
You can ask these, and anything else, before you decide. There are no wrong questions.
- What is this study trying to learn?
- What would I be asked to do, and for how long?
- What are the possible risks and benefits for me?
- Who will see my information, and how is it protected?
- Who do I contact later with questions?
